Comparisons

Right now, I'm sitting at E5 benches, listening to my ipod and trying to do some reading. But i can't help but see people walking past me in both directions, of which many are chemical engineers who have been coming back to school every day of the mid-term break to do their fyp project. Sometimes i just wonder, why are all of us so absorbed and caught up in our fyp just because it's 10 mcs, and not the other 4 / 5 mcs core modules that we've had in the previous semesters? Maybe because fyp sounds scary by itself, and for some of us, fyp may allow us to jump class. Whatever it is, I always believe in doing our best for anything that comes our way, not compromising on our principles and priorities in life. That being said, it's tough huh.

Sometimes i wonder why must we, humans, always compare ourselves with some form of measure to determine our capabilities / standard? In terms of studies, we compare not only our grades, but the amount of effort we put in, the amt of senior's help, the number of tutorials we do...and for fyp, we now compare the amount of time we've been coming back to school for experiment-based projects since we're all doing different projects and results thus cannot really be compared. So what's next? We probably compare our salary, our job position, working hours, and perhaps to marriage, the number of babies, our children's intelligence, and then to our life span when death knocks on our doors.

It seems like all these comparisons come from the world, and basically, invented by humans our selves. Perhaps, we humans would just simply blame it on society. Strangely, even as a christian, more often than not, we compare our giftings, our spiritual maturity, our 'holiness', the amount of service we do, the bible knowledge we have etc. Then the question would be, are all these comparisons important? Are they really necessary? I guess to some extent, they make us more motivated, or maybe they just make us feel inferior or we might end up coveting.

I guess, since humans just can't stop comparing, instead of making up our own basis of comparisons, why don't we just compare againt Jesus? Since he's the ultimate measure we can ever match up to, at the end of age, he'll be our final measure of comparison. All our own wordly comparisons will be nothing by passing dust. Our God, filled wholly with a character of love, must be what we should be seeking for. By remembering His goodness and His underserving grace, we can then humbly and thankfully praise God, and strive to be like Jesus each and every single day of our life. If life, to some of us, is about chasing, then why don't we just shift our focus and chase God instead of wordly things that will come to naught eventually?
