The power of mites
Mark 12:41-44
The Widow's Offering
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything - all she had to live on.
Mite: a small coin, in particular a small Flemish copper coin of very low face value
From this passage of the bible, it is indeed very clearly put forth that God does not look at the amount we give, but the heart we give from and what we give out of. The poor widow chose to give out of her poverty, while the rich just gave out of their wealth, their surplus. Many times, we live in our comfort zone, enjoying all the earthly riches we have. Yet, what we give to God is often just a fraction of all the riches we enjoy, perhaps one-tenth of our salary or pocket money. Yet, we forgot that all these riches were given by God and we're not master of our own riches. We are merely servants of God.
When we give, question our hearts. Are we giving cos we truly love God, or are we giving to earn God's grace, or to give to avoid embarrassment as a Christian. God looks into the depths of our hearts when we give. And even though we may give thousands of dollars during church offering, God would not be pleased if you're not giving it to Him out of love and gratitude.
And giving does not merely come in the form of money. It can be giving your time to God, giving your love to God, giving your life to Him. Do you give him only part of your time, like once a week on sundays when you go to church? Do you give him only part of your life...do you totally surrender to Him? We all fall short many times, and get carried away with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, often putting God aside from our daily activities, basking in all the fun and enjoyment with friends, yet unrealising that we dont' deserve all these.
It's important to know that God is not a God who depends and needs our money, and therefore, we give tithes and offerings. God is a God who has everything, and if He really needs theses money, then in this bible passage, He would not have viewed these 2 mites that the widow has given to be more valuable than the tens of thousands of dollars given by the rich men. Isnt it? God does not need our money. Yet we give, because it's for our souls.
We give to make our souls richer.
When we give, it's a form of gratitude to our Lord for what He has done...and truly, when you give Him out of love and sincerity to Him, you get much more in return.
Have we given our entire lives to God?
Have we let God take full control over our lives?
Have we depended on Him wholly?
Have we given enough time to Him?
Have we been fully obedient to Him?
And i confess before God that I havent. And it's time to do some soul searching within myself.
Indeed, God can have our rooms. He can have our most luxurious bed. He can have our most precious jewellery, tv set, and lap top. But God would not want all these. What He wants is the key to our house, the key to our heart. He is our master of our everything, not us. Let Him take control and God will guide u :)
Satan can take away all the churches in the world.
Satan can take away all the riches of the world.
Satan can take away all the pastors.
but
Satan can never take away the prayers of the people.
Satan can never take away our love for God.
:)
