Happy Father's Day, Daddy!
It's Father's Day today. A pity my brother could'nt be around this year cos he's away in Taiwan, touring around with his friend. But Father's Day is not any less special! As usual, a week before days like these, bro and i would be trying to think of what my dad would like to have. This year, my brother bought a special ice cream for my dad. I've not tried it yet..but dad said it's really good :) So we're glad. Aside from that, i decided to make a card for my dad since i've so much time and i really think it's a waste of money buying cards. It's a tradition in our family to buy cards for our parents on special occassions. Partly because we're quite conservative and don't say things like 'i love you' and 'you mean so much' face to face. So, we choose to write it on cards instead. I did a card for my mom this year too, but i think, both cards were made out of love and about the same amount of effort. I hope my parents won't compare which is nicer! hahaha! i love them both! Since i've never cooked for my family before. I decided to whip out a nice lunch for them today. Wish my brother and dear was around though. I thought about what to cook and decided on Hokkien Mee with Vegetable Soup. My maid was really helpful and helped me buy the ingredients i need from the wet market. My mom was really cute too...she played along with me and cooked up some excuses to 'force' my dad to go for 8.30am service today and tricked him that we'll just be eating dumplings (ba zhang) today. Thanks mommy! So, from 10 am onwards, i was busy preparing all the ingredients to cook. It's my first time cooking for my parents, and the first time trying out this dish. I didn't really follow any recipe, but i roughly asked the procedure from my maid. To make it taste more special, i did my own marination for the pork and prawns and experimented around the stock and my favourite vegetable soup. Yummms. It wasn't as hard as i thought but i still took quite some time. I started at 10, and finished preparing and cooking at 11.45am. hahaha. But nonetheless, it was worth the effort. From the cutting, washing, marinating, frying, boiling and all the way to the chilli... Mom was around and helped me with some washing in between too.
All in all, it was a great experience and i'm happy it turned out pretty well although i think the pork is a little too tough and the mee is a little dry. I'll work on that, and hopefully, dear likes it the next time i cook for him! :) Glad my parents enjoyed their meal! Now, for some pictures!
